A couple of weeks ago when I first visited Whole Foods, I took a look at their shampoo and conditioners. Since I was practically out, I decided to try their 365 Everyday Value brand.
The Skin Deep addict that I am tried to look up the product on their website from my phone but found it wasn’t listed. After looking at the ingredients list on the bottle, I noticed that it did not contain SLS (Sodium Laureth Sulfate), something I try to avoid in ALL of my products.
So at $2.99 a bottle, I decided to give it a try. Besides, as soon as I got home I could look up each individual ingredient to see if there happened to be anything dangerous.
After looking everything up, I found there were only two ingredients in the Moderate Hazard range.
Not too bad. Something I could work with until I could find or make something better.
I have read many recipes on making your own shampoos and know that when you use something without SLS or made from Castile soap, that your hair is probably going to have to detox and it may be very hard to comb for the first couple of weeks (you’ll need a little extra conditioner).
But given this information, I still found that I really do not like this shampoo at all. First, it’s very watery (not really a problem if you are used to Castile soap). No big deal, but I could not get this stuff to lather in my hair at all and found myself using a ton of it just trying to get all of my roots covered.
After a few days, I was sick of it and actually tried pure diluted Castile soap, which lathered better but is too drying on it’s own.
As for right now, I have decided to use up my husband’s shampoo (yes my hair smells like a man) until I can find a better option. I’m thinking next week I will try my hand at a recipe I found to make my own. Couldn’t be any worse than this one anyway.
And so the quest for shampoo moves on. Stay tuned to see what concoction I decide to try next!
Have you found a great eco-friendly and safe shampoo? If so, I’d love to know about it so I can give it a try. Please leave a comment below.

SLS (Sodium Laureth Sulfate) is a form of foaming agent that chemically referred as surfactants that has been contaminated by dioxin a carcinogenic agent. It is commonly to be avoided for it’s harmful effects on human health.

I’ve tried this shampoo and I do not particularly like it either. I did find a brand that lathers up well and doesn’t contain SLS which us what I look for when purchasing shampoo. It’s called Organix and there is an array of yummy flavors. It leaves your hair smelling great, manageable and super soft. It retails for $6.99 and can be purchased at Walgreens. My favorite flavor is the Moroccan argan oil.
Thanks Lindsey! I’ll definitely have to look into Organix. I’m still having a hard time finding one I really like. I’m starting to think I may have my sights set too high lol.
Where do you get the conditioner?
I also hate this shampoo. As it’s watery, I use such a big amount that I can never successfully rinse my hair. It wasn’t hard to comb though, I did not need to use conditioner. (I have medium-short, wavy chestnut hair)
