Flirting with Vegan…Pita Jungle

The journey to try new Vegan dishes continues.  Some have been good and some…not so much.  Here’s one I really liked.

A few weeks ago, I met a peer for lunch at a restaurant named Pita Jungle.  Pita Jungle serves Vegan, Vegetarian and Meat dishes.  From what I can tell, Pita Jungle is only in Arizona with a location coming soon to Pasadena, CA.

I really wanted to try something meatless since I was there.  It would have been a waste not to.  So, based on the recommendation of my lunch date, I went with the Falafel Pita, which happens to be Vegan.  Here is the description from the menu:

Crispy croquettes of chickpeas in a regular pita with cilantro and spices, mixed greens, tomatoes, onions, pickles and tahini sauce.

I ordered mine without the onions. And it was tasty!  The falafel had kind of a meaty taste to me.  Honestly, I really liked it.  Enough so that it has sparked my curiosity in chickpeas and falafel.  I had previously purchased some chickpeas at Whole Foods for a recipe I had for Veggie Burgers. We still haven’t made the burgers, but it’s moved up to the top of the list!  I’m also really curious about falafel and hoping to try making these in the near future.

Did you know… 1 cup of cooked Chickpeas (aka Garbanzo beans) can provide an adult with about 25-30% of your daily Protein, 40-50% of your daily Fiber, 26-50% of your daily Iron and 10% of your daily Potassium? Awesome.

Have you tried Falafel or Chickpea Veggie Burgers? What did you think?

Here are some other yummy toppings for falafel: hommus, tabouleh, or tzatziki (which isn’t vegan). My favorite falafel recipe has carrots in it–a nice way to add additional vegetables to the meal. Also, it’s baked, not fried, adding to the healthiness.

Thanks Amanda! I just checked out your website and am excited for the Garbanzo Beans post. I happen to have some in the fridge I have no idea what to do with!

Pita jungle is the best. I haven’t had a bad thing off the menu yet. Chickpea anything is always good.
