I’m sure you’ve noticed that it’s been quite some time since I posted anything here.  I’ve been having the hardest time getting any relevant thoughts actually out of my head.

I feel like I should have a TON to talk about trying to live greener and cleaner every day, but can’t seem to get it on paper in a form I feel you would want to read.

Recently, I’ve begun to become active in animal advocacy and rescue work and in addition to all the other responsibilities in life have found myself slightly overwhelmed at times.

But I love the idea of this site and want to create a place where people can go who are just starting to figure out all about the harmful chemicals in our stuff and food and the impact on our eco-system as well as the people and animals we share the planet with.  I didn’t really have anywhere to look when I started out not that long ago and I know from the hours and hours and hours I’ve spent researching that it helps to have somewhere to turn when I have questions.

So I ask you this…will you please share your opinion of Tree Hugging Mom with me?  I am currently evaluating whether or not I should continue the site and the direction it should go in.  Below is a quick poll I have created.  I would be so so appreciative if you would take a few minutes to share your thoughts with me.  Don’t worry about feelings.  I really want your honest opinion.

Thanks for stopping by and I can’t wait to hear from you!

Keeki Nail Polish: Candy Corn Gift Pack

I came across this the other day and though I’d share for all of you out there with little girls.  We all know they LOVE their nail polish, but there are so many toxic and questionable ingredients in most nail polishes.

So here’s a great alternative.  Keeki Pure & Simple is a mom-owned company that offers nail and lip products in fun colors like Ooh La La, Sour Apple Slushie and Grasshopper Pie.  They also offer these adorable Halloween Gift Packs.  I think my favorite is the Candy Corn pictured above.

Keeki’s products are Cruelty Free, don’t contain parabens or phthalates and are rated 1-2 on Skin Deep.  They use organic ingredients when possible and most are also gluten free.

I’d love to hear from you if you’ve tried Keeki’s line before so please leave a comment!

A year ago, if you would have told me I’d be trying to eat Vegan, I would have laughed in your face. Even though we were trying to eat organic, I had no intention of giving up meat and dairy. I barely ate veggies so how on Earth was I supposed to live off of them? And I’m sorry, but Chicken Wings are freakin delicious.

But fast-forward a year. A year in which I have learned so much more about the meat and dairy industry and read Alicia Silverstone’s book the Kind Diet and here I am. In the last 10 days, I’m proud to say I’ve only consumed meat products a total of 4 times. And while I’ve eaten less dairy, it’s still a work in progress.

But this is not a post about going Vegan. It’s about Bountiful Baskets and why I love this Food Co-op so.

If you haven’t heard of them, Bountiful Baskets is a volunteer run produce co-op currently serving the following areas:

AZ, CO, GA, ID, KS, MT, NM, NV, OK, OR, SC, SD, TX, UT, WA and WY.

If your area is not listed, check back with them often because new sites are constantly opening.

Here’s what I love about them. Each week, a time frame opens up where you can “contribute” to a basket. Once everyone has contributed, the money is used to purchase fresh fruits and veggies from farms and farmers as local as possible. And on Saturday morning, I get to get up nice and early to go pickup my basket! I love the surprise and anticipation of not knowing ahead of time what I’m going to get.

There are conventional and organic baskets. And because the produce is purchased locally, you get what’s in season for your area. And that’s where the fun is. We get variety now. For me, a person who hasn’t even tried most veggies, I love the challenge of having to come up with a dish to use these little treasures in. There is no way I would have purchased some of the veggies from the grocery store by choice. But here they come, and so I have to use them or lose them and I hate wasting money!

Check out the goodies I’ve recently received:

Wow! That’s a lot of food! Some of it we use right away, some we freeze for later and some is donated to family!

Because my goal is to go as Vegan as possible, I love that I get to experiment with new veggies. It reaffirms my thought that I CAN have yummy delicious food without torturing animals in the process. Each basket is a step closer to Vegan for me and a chance to expose my son to good healthy whole foods that have a much smaller impact on the planet.

Anyone else around here tried Bountiful Baskets or something similar? What did you think?

Creating a Non-Toxic Kitchen

In our house, it seems like one of the hardest places to keep clean is the kitchen.  No sooner do I have everything put away and wiped down does it become the collect all for more stuff.  My kitchen island is the meeting point for all things looking to be put back where they [...]

Flirting with Vegan…Pita Jungle

The journey to try new Vegan dishes continues.  Some have been good and some…not so much.  Here’s one I really liked. A few weeks ago, I met a peer for lunch at a restaurant named Pita Jungle.  Pita Jungle serves Vegan, Vegetarian and Meat dishes.  From what I can tell, Pita Jungle is only in [...]

Flirting with Vegan…Radicchio Pizza

One of the goals I have set for myself this year is to try every recipe in Alicia Silverstone’s book The Kind Diet. First up…Radicchio Pizza with Truffle Oil on page 144. Anyone who knows me personally knows that one of my very most favorite foods to eat is pizza. I could eat it 24/7. [...]
